An unidentified man was killed in Riverside today when he leaned into the path of a New Jersey Transit train and was struck. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the 5:39 p.m. accident.

Described as a 50ish white man, the victim was standing beside a bicycle along Franklin Street when he leaned over and into the path of the southbound River Line train, NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel said. The train operator applied emergency brakes in an effort to avoid the man, Stessel said.

None of the 43 passengers aboard the train was injured. Train service was suspended between Riverside and Cinnaminson for more than 21/2 hours while the accident was investigated, Stessel said. Riders traveled between the stations on shuttle buses instead.    - Larry King
