Who said politicians don't fulfill campaign promises? Last May, then-candidate Michael Nutter laid down some old-school rhymes for me. This week, he did it again.

Who said politicians don't fulfill campaign promises? Last May, then-candidate Michael Nutter laid down some old-school rhymes for me as we walked through Center City on the way to a campaign event. At the time, I challenged the notorious nerd to shoot a rapping commercial reincarnating "Mixmaster Mike" from his DJ days at the Impulse disco in North Philly.
Nutter respectfully declined, saying he'd get jiggy for the masses after he won.
Monday night, at an inaugural bash, Nutter paid up. He wowed the crowd with his mastery of the Sugarhill Gang classic, "Rapper's Delight," a 2,984-word throwdown that includes the following:
Check it out, I'm the C-A-S-A, the N-O-V-A,
And the rest is F-L-Y,
You see I go by the code of the doctor of the mix,
And these reasons I'll tell you why.
You see, I'm six foot one, and I'm tons of fun
When I dress to a T,
You see, I got more clothes than Muhammad Ali
and I dress so viciously.
I got bodyguards, I got two big cars
That definitely ain't the wack
The video of the newly minted mayor getting down with his funky self – assisted by Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson, of The Roots, has taken the web by storm, several Philadelphia blogs have posted his You Tube musical debut. I said it then, and I say it now: This wonk can rap. He may even set a new fashion trend as the only guy to strut his stuff in a suit and tie.
No less an authority than the Inquirer's Dan DeLuca concurs, writing on his In the Mix blog (http://blogs.phillynews.com/inquirer/inthemix)
And let us now praise the Mayor's interpretative skills: In the artist formerly known as Councilman Nutter's hands, the protean 1979 rap hit becomes an anthem of populist inclusion: 'See, I am Wonder Mike, and I'd like to say hello/To the black, to the white, the red, and the brown, the purple and yellow ...."
