More live traffic cams for Philadelphia

Want to see, actually see, how traffic is on the Schuylkill between the Conshohocken Curve and the Blue Route?

Want to see, actually see, how traffic is on the Schuylkill between the Conshohocken Curve and the Blue Route?

You can. Right now. Live, on PennDot webcams.

More than 100 are up and operating on Southeastern Pennsylvania highways, including Routes I-95, 202, 422, 100, 30, 309, I-76 (the Schuylkill) and I-476 (the Blue Route).

The Pennsylvania Turnpike and many South Jersey roads are also covered by cameras anyone with Internet access can check.

But how about the rest of the Schuylkill? Roosevelt Boulevard? Or busy Penrose Avenue?

Sorry, you can't just yet.

That will change, however, in coming months.

Just this week, some Schuylkill lanes have been closed overnight between Spring Garden and South Streets, so a PennDOT contractor could install optical fiber for a system that includes cameras, traffic-alert signs and traffic-measuring detectors.

All of the Schuylkill west of Passayunk Avenue should have cams by early next year.

So should Routes 1 (Roosevelt Boulevard) and 291 (Pennrose Avenue, 26th Street near the airport).

These additions are part of a $23.7 million project that started last summer.

In all, the plan is for 29 more cameras to keep an eye on the Schuylkill, with the other routes getting 14.
