Bishop to meet with parishioners on St. Mary’s closure

Bishop Joseph Galante, head of the Diocese of Camden, travels to Malaga tonight to hear members of St. Mary's parish voice their concerns about his decision to close their 250-family parish.

Bishop Joseph Galante, head of the Diocese of Camden, travels to Malaga tonight to hear members of St. Mary's parish voice their concerns about his decision to close their 250-family parish.

The meeting, which starts at 7 p.m., is also expected to attract picketers from other parishes in the diocese that are also threatened with closure or merger.

On April 4, Galante announced that he was shrinking the number of parishes in the six-county diocese from 124 to 66, citing the declining number of priests.

About 30 of those parishes will close outright; the others will become "worship sites" within newly formed parishes.
