If you're interested in stem cell research, or just confused about what a stem cell is, you may want to attend a half-day of workshops on stem cell biology today at the Marriott Philadelphia Downtown.

Sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania's Institute for Regenerative Medicine, the event is part of this week's meeting of the International Society for Stem Cell Research.

Eight workshops featuring leading researchers will be held from 1-5 p.m. on the hotel's fifth floor. The topics will include stem cells' role in cardiology, cancer, and neurology, and ethical and legal issues.

Following these sessions, a free public symposium will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Political and scientific leaders will comment on the ethical debates and concerns related to stem cell research.

Space is limited for the workshop; pre-registered attendees will be given priority on site. Register online at http://www.isscr.org/meetings/pub_reg1.cfm
