Two sentenced in Atlantic City gambling ring

The two leaders of a sports bookmaking ring that operated inside an Atlantic City casino were each sentenced to five years in prison today.

The two leaders of a sports bookmaking ring that operated inside an Atlantic City casino were each sentenced to five years in prison today.

Jack Buscemi Jr., of Mullica Hill, and Andrew Micali, of Ventnor, pleaded guilty in December in a case the attorney general said involved millions of dollars.

Buscemi pleaded guilty to second-degree conspiracy to commit money laundering, and Micali pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal usury.

The charges stem from Operation High Roller, an investigation led by the State Police and the Division of Criminal Justice that involved 11 other law enforcement agencies in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The investigation, which began in March 2006, revealed Micali relied on a network of agents to take in bets on college and professional football and basketball at the Borgata Hotel Casino poker room.

Micali and Buscemi received a percentage of the gambling proceeds.

Six other men were sentenced to probation today in Superior Court in Atlantic County for lesser roles in the scheme.
