No SEPTA strike Sunday

SEPTA bus, subway and trolley operators will not strike when their contract expires Sunday morning, as negotiations continue between the transit agency and Transport Workers Union Local 234.

SEPTA bus, subway and trolley operators will not strike when their contract expires Sunday morning, as negotiations continue between the transit agency and Transport Workers Union Local 234.

SEPTA said TWU president Willie Brown told SEPTA negotiators there would be no strike over the weekend or "in the immediate future," SEPTA spokesman Richard Maloney said. Brown could not be immediately reached for comment.

The two sides remain far apart in efforts to reach a new contract, Maloney said. But he said the announcement "takes a lot of pressure off the business community and the schools," which rely on SEPTA.

Workers will continue to work under the provisions of the existing contract. There was no immediate word on how long the no-strike promise was good for.
