A Philadelphia police officer is in jail on federal charges that he sold crack cocaine and conspired to rob a drug dealer he was willing to shoot if necessary, authorities announced this afternoon.

Alhinde Weems, 33, a five-year veteran assigned to the 18th District in West Philadelphia, was suspended for 30 days, pending dismissal, after he showed up this morning at an undisclosed hotel planning to rob a local drug dealer, authorities said.

Instead, the officer and Lamar Smith, 27, also of Philadelphia, were taken into custody after a sting operation carried out by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, FBI, Philadelphia Police Department and U.S. Attorney's Office.

Authorities said Smith arrived at the last minute, taking the place of "Small Man," who did not show up as expected. Authorities do not know Small Man's identity.

If convicted, Weems faces a mandatory five-year sentence and possible 20-year consecutive sentence. He is being held without bail, pending a federal hearing April 1.
