Mayfair man turns himself in, charged with fatal hit-run

About 1:30 this morning, Donta Johnson of Mayfair walked into police headquarters and confessed to a fatal hit-run accident earlier this month, according to police.

Calvin Wilkerson, 18, of the city's North Central section, was struck at about 2 a.m. on May 7 while crossing Ninth Street at Roosevelt Boulevard in Hunting Park. He was pronounced dead less than a half-hour later at Temple University Hospital.

The northbound vehicle, which did not stop, was described as a dark minivan, police said.

Investigators believed the van sustained a damaged hood and a a broken windshield.

The next day a woman called police to say her green Dodge Caravan had been stolen from the driveway behind her residence in the 3400 block of Cottman Avenue.

Johnson, 25, lives at the same address, police said.

The minivan was recovered shortly afterward on the 7500 block of Leon Street.

Whether there was a relationship between Johnson and the woman was unclear, but the charges against him include making false reports, noted Officer Christine O'Brien, a police spokeswoman.

Johnson is also charged with homicide by vehicle, accident involving death, accident involving death while driving without a license, and tampering with evidence.
