NEWARK - A New Jersey father has arrived in Brazil today with the goal of bringing his son back to the United States.

A federal court in Brazil ruled that David Goldman, of Tinton Falls, can regain custody of his 8-year-old son, Sean. The boy's mother took him to her native Brazil in 2004 after divorcing Goldman.

She remarried and died and the boy was being raised by his Brazilian stepfather.

Brazil's largest newspaper is reporting the stepfather's family has filed an appeal of the court ruling.

Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) says the boy is scheduled to be turned over to his father tomorrow. Smith is planning to travel to Brazil to ensure the handover goes smoothly.
