Four people remained hospitalized today, two with serious injuries, after a taxi veered onto the pedestrian-filled sidewalk in front of the Kimmel Center on Broad Street.
A female bicyclist who suffered a skull fracture in the crash last night was in critical condition at Hahnemann University Hospital.
Alfred Haubert, who was struck by the cab, had one leg amputated below the knee and may have to lose his other leg, said his daughter-in-law, Dawn Haubert. Haubert, 58, of the city's Tacony section, is at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital with fractures and internal bleeding, among other injuries.
"He's doing OK, but he has numerous surgeries ahead of him," said Dawn Haubert.
The Victory Cab taxi was headed south on Broad Street shortly after 10 p.m. when it swerved to avoid a Nissan Sentra that was trying to change lanes, police said.
The cab jumped the curb, hit a lamppost and the cyclist, then spun back into the street and hit Haubert, who was waiting to cross the street.
The driver is in serious condition and his female passenger in good condition, both at Hahnemann, police said.
No charges had been filed. Police were reviewing surveillance footage to determine what happened, and said it did not appear any laws had been broken.
The crash left the cab in the middle of Broad, causing traffic backups that delayed ambulances. Broad was blocked off between Pine and Spruce Streets until the scene was cleared.
The crash came eight days after a hit-and-run cab seriously injured a 29-year-old cyclist on Broad near Federal Street. Amanda Gillern suffered a punctured lung, pelvis fracture, and broken neck, leg, and ribs.
She was released this week from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital with a leg in a cast and her neck in a brace that will immobilize it for three months, said Stuart Leon, a friend.
Police had not made any arrests in that accident.
