Motorist killed in fiery tanker crash

A motorist was killed in a fiery crash this morning after running a stop sign and slamming into a gasoline tanker truck in Salem County, police said. The accident closed U.S. Route 40 in Upper Pittsgrove Township for hours. Police said a silver Mitsubishi car headed northbound on Commissioners Pike/County Road 581 slammed into the eastbound truck at about 1:48 a.m. The car failed to stop at the intersection, State Police Det. Brian Polite said. The car became lodged under the truck's gasoline tank and caught fire, killing the car's driver, Polite said. No word on whether the truck driver was hurt.
