The son of a Chester City police officer used his father's gun to kill his ex-girlfriend last night, and later fled to his father's house, where he was shot and killed by police, an official said today.
Aaron Michael, 29, of Chester, confronted Andrea Arrington in the 1600 block of Constitution Avenue in Ridley Township after Arrington had come home from work.
Michael is the son of John Michael, who has been a member of the Chester City police department for about 15 years, said Detective Sgt. Scott Willoughby, of the Ridley Township police.
Arrington, who lived nearby with her grandmother, was walking to pick up her two-year-old son, Aaron, from a baby-sitter when she was stopped by Michael. The two began arguing about a protection-from-abuse order that Arrington, 23, had filed on July 2. Michael had been arrested on July 15 for violating the order.
"He was obviously very angry about the PFA," Willoughby said. "He'd been harassing her ever since."
During the argument last night, Michael pulled out a gun and shot Arrington "a couple of times," Willoughby said. After Arrington fell to the ground, Michael stood over her and continued firing. Arrington was hit about 11 times, Willoughby said.
The gun - John Michael's duty weapon - was a 40-caliber Heckler & Koch semi-automatic pistol. His father was on vacation in Florida.
Aaron Michael then fled to his father's home in the 100 block of 23d Street in Chester. Detectives attempted to coax Michael out of the house, Willoughby said. Michael told police, who contacted him on his cell phone, that he planned to kill himself.
Michael then came out of the front of the house, where he was confronted by Chester police. He ran back inside and then left through the back of the house, where Chester officers were waiting, Willoughby said. Michael raised his gun toward one of the officers, who then shot Michael in the chest.
Willoughby declined to identify the officer who fired the shot.
Michael was transported to Crozer Chester Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:36 a.m.
Arrington also was transported to the medical center and was in surgery for most of the night. She died at 7:21 a.m.
