Police: Camden man kills one neighbor, wounds another

A Camden man who authorities said was "acting erratically" Tuesday afternoon opened fire near his home, killing a 16-year-old boy and wounding another man - both described as random victims.

The 25-year-old suspect then fired on police who responded to the shooting about 4:30 p.m., according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Officers returned fire, and the suspect fled into his home in the 3100 block of Pleasant Street. He was not injured.

The man surrendered a short time later, authorities said. He was not identified last night because charges had not been filed.

The 16-year-old victim, who also was not identified last night, was taken to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after the shooting.

The second victim, a 68-year-old man, also was taken to Cooper, where he was listed in critical condition last night.

Authorities said that the sequence of events was still under investigation, but that witnesses told police the suspect had been acting strangely before firing a handgun outside his home.

Authorities did not elaborate on the man's behavior prior to the shooting.

The 16-year-old victim was shot outside; then the gunman appeared to have fired into his neighbor's house, wounding the second victim.

Although the man likely knew both victims from the neighborhood, there was no apparent motive for the shootings.

"As far as we can tell, there was no provocation," said Jason Laughlin, a spokesman for the Prosecutor's Office.
