A 17-year-old boy was shot in a leg tonight at a Southwest Philadelphia park where moments before, about 30 youths, some as young as 12, had been playing basketball, police said.

The shooting occurred around 8:20 p.m. in Cobbs Creek Park at 61st Street and Baltimore Avenue, said Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives. An organized league was scheduled to play there, but canceled because of the heat. However, about 30 youths showed up to play pickup games.

The 17-year-old, whose name was not released, was leaving the basketball court to buy a soda when he was confronted by a younger teen on a bike, Walker said. After an argument, the teen on the bike hit the victim in the head with the gun and then shot him in a leg.

The victim was reported in stable condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. No arrest was reported.
