The Philadelphia Police Marine Unit recovered the body of 9-year-old Madousou Konneh from the Schuylkill this morning, a day-and-a-half after she was pushed into the river while playing with friends.
The body was found a half-mile downstream from the boat ramp where the incident happened Tuesday evening.
Police, Coast Guard and Fire Department boats searched late that night, and the police and Coast Guard units kept looking yesterday, using sonar and drag lines.
Madousou was with her sister, Mafata, 14, and another half-dozen children, all Liberian immmigrants, who wound up at the Schuylkill near Bartram's Garden in Southwest Philadelphia on Tuesday evening.
A boy apparently pushed her in as a joke.
Madousou, who couldn't swim, wound up in over her head. Two other girls got hold of her but lost their grips, Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives said.
The current pulled her into the center of the river and she disappeared, he said.
The children then ran about two miles to the nearest highway and flagged down a police car.
