Police throughout the region are planning stepped up enforcement efforts to reduce accidents during the long holiday weekend.

The efforts will include DUI checkpoints and roving patrols in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Local and state police say they also will target aggressive drivers and speeders.

The increased enforcement is tied to the national "Over the Limit. Under Arrest." advertising campaign aimed at combating DUI.

On another motoring note, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has suspended all construction and maintenance to improve traffic flow on the toll road during the weekend.

Turnpike officials say they expect 2.1 million vehicles to use the toll road during the holiday, a slight increase over last year. They anticipate some congestion during peak travel times from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday and 2 to 6 p.m. on Monday.
