Driver accused of intentional hit and run surrenders

The man accused of intentionally driving into a group of women and killing a pregnant mother of two last weekend surrendered to police today to face charges.

Duane Crump, 23, met with his attorney at the Criminal Justice Center this afternoon, and they approached a 12th District sergeant who happened to be at the courthouse.

The sergeant arrested Crump and brought him to the Homicide Unit, where he was being processed on murder and aggravated assault charges.

Crump, of North Philadelphia, is accused of running down Kamilah El-Amin and then backing over her outside a Point Breeze club shortly after closing early last Saturday.

El-Amin, 22, who lived with her mother in East Germantown, died Monday at Crozer-Chester Medical Center from her injuries. A friend of hers also was injured, police said.

Crump tried to leave the scene, but was caught nearby. Originally, he was charged with aggravated assault and driving under the influence. He posted bail on those charges and was freed.

A murder charge was lodged against Crump on Thursday.

Homicide Capt. James Clark said today that Crump and El-Amin had no prior relationship.

There had been some kind of argument between Crump and a group of women outside the club, and Crump and El-Amin exchanged words, Clark said. Crump then drove his car into the group of women, striking El-Amin and her friend.

"We believe it was very much an intentional act," Clark said. "As to the why, we're not sure."

He said there were "a lot of rumors out there" as to what sparked the confrontation, but "whatever transpired shouldn't have led to this."

El-Amin was pinned under Crump's car and a group of bystanders helped to free her.

At the hospital, doctors discovered that El-Amin, who had two sons under the age of three, was eight weeks pregnant.
