Main Line manse finally leveled

La Ronda is no more.

La Ronda is no more.

At 10:53 a.m., the last wall of the Spanish style mansion in Bryn Mawr tumbled to the ground under the hammering of yellow hydraulic excavator.

"I'm kind of glad to see it's over with," said Suzanne Atterbury, 50, who grew up in the house. "It's over. At least there was somebody here to say goodbye."

Grenville Foote, 74, an aficionad of old buildings, stopped to watch the end while on his way to his part time marketing sales job in Conshohocken.

"I hope it can teach [Lower Merion] Township a lesson that they should protect their historical homes with more vigor," he said.

The demolition crew took down the castle's gothic circular tower this morning with a yellow hydraulic excavator before setting to work on the remaining square tower.

But a stubborn I-beam prompted the wreckers to bring in a second excavator, which helped to finish the job.

"It is very distressing to see such a lovely building come down, but it's putting up a good fight," Foote said.

On Thursday, hopes to save the Spanish style mansion disappeared in the dust as the demolition crew knocked down 80 percent of the structure.
