Authorities have identified a man struck and killed yesterday by a train headed to Philadelphia from Atlantic City.
Steven Carroll, 31, of Pitman, was hit at about 4:30 p.m. just east of the Lindenwold train station, NJ Transit spokeswoman Courtney Carroll said today.
"It's not clear what he was doing on the tracks," Carroll said.
The conductor hit the emergency brakes, but was unable to stop the train before it struck Carroll, she said.
The train left Atlantic City at 3:30 p.m. and was scheduled to arrive at 30th Street Station at 5:15 p.m. The accident shut down the Atlantic City rail line in both directions until 7:15 p.m.
There were 70 passengers on board, Carroll said.
