Stretch of Northeast Extension to be widened in 2011

Construction on the southern six miles of a project to replace and widen the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeast Extension is scheduled to begin in spring 2011, officials say.

Construction on the southern six miles of a project to replace and widen the Pennsylvania Turnpike's Northeast Extension is scheduled to begin in spring 2011, officials say.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission said this week that the $300 million construction project would start with the stretch extending from the Mid-County interchange to the Lansdale interchange.

Two overhead bridges, at Kriebel Road in Towamencin Township and Bethel Road in Worcester Township, were rebuilt in 2008. That move was made so that the roadway could be widened from four to six lanes, the commission said.

The northern section of the rebuilding project from the Lansdale interchange to Berks Road is scheduled for construction in 2014.

When complete, the total 11-mile stretch will have not only six travel lanes, but also 12-foot-wide inner and outer shoulders. Now, there is no inner shoulder and only a 10-foot outer shoulder, officials said.
