Police break up robbery in North Phila., get into a shootout

Philadelphia police got into a shootout this evening with three men believed to have been in the middle of a home invasion in North Philadelphia.

Around 6 p.m., two Highway Patrol officers were flagged down by a man who said that armed intruders had forced their way into his home in the 1800 block of North 18th Street, said Lt. Frank Vanore.

The officers went to the location and one of them saw a suspect through a first-floor window, Vanore said. The suspect shot twice at the officer, who then returned fire.

The three men then attempted to flee through the back of the home and got into a gunfight with the other officer, Vanore said.

Police arrested all three men and recovered several firearms. Their names were not immediately available.

One of the suspects was shot in the arm and was being treated at Temple University Hospital, Vanore said.

No officers were injured, and their names were not released.
