Woman, tot injured in Phila. house fire

A 55-year-old woman and a toddler were hospitalized today following a house fire in the Juniata Park section of the city, officials said.

The woman and a 18-month-old boy suffered smoke inhalation and burns in the blaze in the two story house on the 1300 block of East Luzerne Street.

Both were taken to Temple University Hospital and are expected to recover.

The blaze on the second floor of the house was reported at 11:52 p.m. and declared under control five minutes later.

Fire officials said the house had smoke alarms but they were not working. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The American Red Cross meanwhile said between 8 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. today, at least 58 other people other were forced out of their homes as a result of 10 fires in Southeastern Pennsylvania.

One fire on the 4500 block of North 17th Street left 11 people in three families without a home, the Red Cross said.
