Police shoot man in South Phila.

A Philadelphia police officer shot a 31-year-old man while responding to a call of a domestic disturbance in South Philadelphia Tuesday night, police said.

The man charged at the officer with a large piece of glass outside his first-floor residence around 8 p.m. in the 2200 block of South 15th Street between Jackson and Wolf Streets, police said.

The officer, assigned to the First District, responded to the domestic disturbance call, and then an "assist officer" alert was broadcast on police radio. The incident was quickly declared under control.

"The officer encountered a male who attempted to stab him with some type of glass," said Lt. Frank Vanore, spokesman for the police department. "The officer fired one time striking him in the chest."

The man was transported by a police wagon to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was listed in stable condition. No further information was available about him.

No officers were injured, police said.
