Burning, upside-down SUV reveals a murder

Police and firefighters responding to a report of an auto accident in North Philadelphia Thursday night instead discovered a homicide when they pulled a 58-year-old man from a burning, upside-down Toyota 4Runner.

He had been shot in the back of the head, police said.

Police and firefighters responded to the accident on the 3300 block of West Westmoreland Street at 11:18 p.m. and found the man unresponsive in the overturned vehicle, officials said.

After extricating the man from the vehicle, rescuers discovered he had been shot in the back of the head.

He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:43 p.m., police said. His name has not been released yet.

Investigators are seeking a motive in the slaying.
