A 23-year-old man from northern New Jersey drowned early this morning in Medford's Taunton Lake, police said.
Jeremy Chan, of Mountain Lakes in Morris County, was canoeing with another man in the lake in the early morning hours Saturday when the canoe capsized, according to Medford Township Police Chief Anthony Canale. One man was able to swim back to shore and went to a home on S. Wendover Drive in Medford, where he alerted friends.
They called police around 2:15 a.m. and returned to the lake to search for Chan, police said, where they were met by police and Medford's marine unit.
A state police helicopter spotted Chan's body, and a dive team from the fire department recovered him from the lake around 3:20 a.m.
Emergency personnel administered CPR, but Chan was later pronounced dead at Virtua Hospital.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is ongoing, police said.
