New auxiliary bishop for Archdiocese of Philadelphia

Cardinal Justin Rigali announced Tuesday the appointment of Monsignor John J. McIntyre as the newest auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Cardinal Justin Rigali announced Tuesday the appointment of Monsignor John J. McIntyre as the newest auxiliary bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

McIntyre, 46, succeeds Auxiliary Bishop Robert P. Maginnis, 76, whose retirement was also announced yesterday. The two joined Rigali at a joint news conference to announce the changes.

Since 1999 McIntyre has served as secretary to Rigali and to the previous archbishop, Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua. He is scheduled to be ordained a bishop Aug. 6 at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, and will assume Maginnis' duties as head of the Archdiocesan Secretariat for Evangelization.

The archdiocese counts nearly 1.5 million members in Philadelphia and the four surrounding Pennsylvania counties.
