Barnegat schools reopen after lockdown

Police in Ocean County locked down an entire school district for two-and-a-half hours this morning after a district official reported there was an armed man at the Barnegat High School, authorities said.

Police in Ocean County locked down an entire school district for two-and-a-half hours this morning after a district official reported there was an armed man at the Barnegat High School, authorities said.

Six Barnegat Township schools, including two day-care centers, were locked down from 9:30 a.m. until noon, said Barnegat Lt. Keith Germain.

Police searched the high school but did not find anyone with a gun on the campus, Germain said.

After the search, investigators located an adult male in Brick Township who Germain said was "person of interest" in the investigation. Germain said the "person of interest" had not been on the high school campus today and it was unclear if the man had planned to go there.

Germain did not reveal how the man was connected with the high school. The man has not been arrested.

Police later recovered 10 shotguns from a Brick Township residence. Germain declined to provide the address or say if the guns were loaded.

"None of the kids were ever in danger," Germain said. "We always treat it as if it's the worse case scenario, so we're in place and prepared."
