Triathlon swimmer’s death still being investigated

The cause and manner of triathlete Derek Valentino's death have not yet been officially determined, but a source close to the investigation said he drowned. It's not yet clear what health conditions or other factors may have contributed to his death, the source said.

Valentino, 40, a mail carrier from Prospect Park, disappeared Saturday morning during the swimming portion of the Philadelphia Insurance Triathlon. Police recovered his body from the Schuylkill River Sunday night after more than 24 hours of searching.

Valentino was a father of two and a first-time triathlon participant who friends said trained hard for the event.
