Bicyclist, 70, fatally struck by pickup

A 70-year-old Vineland cyclist died Thursday morning after being struck by a pickup truck in Franklin Township, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.

A 70-year-old Vineland cyclist died Thursday morning after being struck by a pickup truck in Franklin Township, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.

Robert R. Schwinn riding along the northbound side of Route 555 (Main Road) near Weymouth Road when a 1992 Ford 150 pickup struck him from behind at 7:23 a.m.

Schwinn, of the 500 block of Sarah Place, was wearing a helmet and safety reflector vest at the time of the collision. He pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from Underwood-Memorial Hospital in Woodbury.

The driver, Anthony Leatherwood, of the township's Franklinville section, was taken to the hospital for observation.

No charges have been filed against Leatherwood pending an investigation. An autopsy was scheduled for today.
