Late-night swims on unguarded beaches claimed the lives of two men at the Jersey Shore in separate incidents over the holiday weekend, according to authorities.
Anton Zhmachynski, a citizen of the Republic of Belarus who was living in Ocean City, was found by police on the resort's 7th Street beach shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday.
Zhmachynski, 22, had come to the country in search of summer work, according to Ocean City police.
Bystanders called authorities when Zhmachynski failed to come out of the water after he and a friend went for a swim at the 8th Street Beach, about a block from where he was discovered. Paramedics administered CPR and Zhmachynski was taken to Shore Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
In Atlantic City at 1:35 a.m. Monday, Emily Maldonado, of Philadelphia, flagged down a police officer after her boyfriend, Melvin Brown Jr., disappeared in the surf, according to Atlantic City Sgt. Monica McMenniman.
Police located the 24-year-old Philadelphia resident, who went into the water alone, about an hour later, five blocks away on the beach near Iowa Avenue. He was pronounced dead on scene.
Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the drowning and foul play was not suspected, McMenniman said.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
