A Canadian woman was sentenced today in a Philadelphia courtroom to 70 months in prison for running a trafficking ring that smuggled millions of ecstasy pills into the United States.

Phuong Thi Tran, 39, of Mississauga, Ontario, was arrested in April after investigations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Philadelphia and Detroit.

Tran pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in February and was sentenced today by U.S. District Court Judge Petrese B. Tucker.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says Tran and her associates often smuggled about 100,000 ecstasy pills into the United States per week.

The drugs were manufactured by various Asian organized crime gangs in Canada, officials said.
