An armed male was shot and killed by police during a foot pursuit in the city's Frankford section Thursday night, police said.

Police in the 15th District responded to reports of a person with a gun and gunfire in the area of bridge and Charles Streets, police said.

At 10:17 p.m. an officer reported he was chasing two males, police said. The officer screamed for the males to get on the ground and then another officer reported that shots had been fired in the 5100 block of Charles Street.

The "officer observed the suspect running with a weapon in his hand," said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.

The officer "caught up to the suspect who refused to show his hands" and then the officer fired his 9mm Glock twice "striking the suspect twice in the chest," Vanore said.

The wounded suspect, whose name and age were not immediately available, was transported by police to Aria Health - Torresdale Campus where he was pronounced dead at 10:36 p.m.

The other male suspect was apprehended and a gun was recovered down the street from the shooting, police said. Officers said residents in the area reported hearing up to 10 gunshots before police arrived.
