Mom’s boyfriend charged in toddler’s death

The killer of 1-1/2-year-old Samari Campbell was her mother's boyfriend, according to Philadelphia police.

Edward Drayton, 20, is in custody on charges of murder and endangering the welfare of a child.

Hands were the weapon that inflicted the fatal blows on the afternoon of Oct. 23, police said.

Drayton told officers that Samari got injured after he left her alone in a shower in their apartment on Blue Grass Road in Northeast Philadelphia.

She was pronounced dead at about 7 p.m. at the Aria Health-Torresdale Campus.

Authorities dismissed Drayton's suggestion that the oldest of the mother's three children, a 3-year-old, might have caused the injuries.

Drayton is believed to be the father of the third child, a 3-month-old baby.
