Alleged carjacker killed at Penn was a bail jumper

Police have identified two 18-year-old men - one dead, one jailed - accused of carjacking a Cadillac and getting into a shoot-out with police early Sunday morning on the edge of the University of Pennsylvania's campus.

Police have identified two 18-year-old men - one dead, one jailed - accused of carjacking a Cadillac and getting into a shoot-out with police early Sunday morning on the edge of the University of Pennsylvania's campus.

The two armed suspects crashed the Cadillac into a barrier at 40th and Locust Streets and fled across a field at the campus' western edge, Philadelphia police said.

According to police, one of the suspects, Karl Sappleton, shot at the Penn police officers chasing him. The officers returned fire, killing Sappleton behind a city library at 40th and Walnut Streets. The officers were not hit.

The second suspect, Leslie Mosby, was arrested by Philadelphia police officers about a block away, at 39th and Walnut.

Mosby, of the 5500 block of Ludlow Street in West Philadelphia, was charged Monday with four counts of attempted murder, carjacking, robbery and other crimes.

Police believe the two men carjacked a grey Cadillac at 50th and Arch Streets about 3 a.m. Sunday. Philadelphia police spotted the car a short time later and tried to stop it.

After a short chase, the suspects crashed the Cadillac and ran. The shoot-out happened near several Penn dormitories, but no one else was hurt in the confrontation.

Sappleton, of the 4500 block of Tampa Street in North Philadelphia's Juniata Park section, was wanted for jumping bail on an earlier drug arrest, according to police and court records.

The District Attorney's Office and the Philadelphia police Homicide Unit are investigating the shooting.
