A 44-year-old Bensalem man was struck and killed Monday night by a vehicle driven by a Bensalem police community service officer.

The pedestrian, who Bensalem police did not identify, stepped onto Street Road near Hulmeville Rd. about 8:30 p.m. The on-duty officer, also not identified, traveling eastbound on Street Road on his way back to the police station at the time of the accident, said Sgt. Andrew Aninsman, a spokesman for Bensalem Township police. The struck pedestrian was transported to a local hospital where he died.

Community service officers process prisoners and enforce parking violations among other tasks, he said.

Aninsman, citing an ongoing investigation, did not release any further information.
