Police kill carjacking suspect, wound second

Philadelphia police shot two men - killing one - who allegedly fled police Tuesday afternoon in a car that had been identified as stolen in a carjacking last month, police said.
Around 3:30 p.m., three officers opened fire on the burgundy Chevrolet sedan when the car pinned two officers against a police cruiser at the intersection of 23d Street and West Susquehanna Avenue in North Philadelphia, said police spokesman Lt. Ray Evers.
The Chevrolet had been stolen in a carjacking on Jan. 29 in the 900 block of Noble Street just north of Chinatown, Evers said.
A relative of the carjacking victim spotted the sedan Tuesday afternoon and called 911. Police began pursuing the car at 11th and Ruscomb Streets in the city's Logan section.
Police converged on the stolen vehicle at 23d and Susquehanna, in the middle of the Raymond Rosen public housing developement, but the driver tried to smash his way out, damaging two police cars, Evers said.
One of the occupants appeared to be reaching under his seat when the officers started shooting, Evers.
The suspects were taken to Temple University. A 24-year-old man was pronounced dead and a 37-year-old man was listed in critical condition.
Their names were not released, but Evers said the 24-year-old had eight previous arrests and the older man has had 21 arrests.
At the scene, the front windshield of the sedan was riddled with bullet holes and at least one passenger-side window was shot out.
Officers were awaiting a search warrant to look for a weapon inside the car.
April Talley, 46, a resident at Raymond Rosen, said she had just gotten home when she heard a commotion outside and looked out her second-floor rear window at the intersection.
"The boys wouldn't get out of the car. The cops start blazin'," she said.
"The boys did not shoot," Talley said.
