Man shot in Center City subway stairwell

A 37-year-old man was shot and seriously wounded early Tuesday on a stairwell leading to a Center City subway concourse, police said.

Officers found the screaming victim about 3 a.m. on street level at the entrance to the Broad Street Line near the Ritz Carlton at Walnut and Broad Streets.

The man, who had been shot in the neck, was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital, where he was reported in stable condition, police said.

The subway was not operating at the time and all gates to the concourse level were locked. Bullet casings were found at the bottom of the southwest stairwell, said Jerri Williams, spokeswoman for SEPTA.

Central detectives are seeking both the shooter and a motive for the attack.
