A Marine from Ocean County was killed Wednesday during combat in Afghanistan.

A Marine from Ocean County was killed Wednesday during combat in Afghanistan.

Nicholas Ott, 23, of Manchester, died in Helmand province in southeast Afghanistan, according to the Department of Defense.

Ott joined the Marine Corps in 2007 and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division in Hawaii in 2010.

His death comes days after an Army Ranger from Pitman was killed in action in Afghanistan. Sgt. Alessandro Plutino was a rifle team leader on his third tour in Afghanistan.

The Star-Leader is reporting that it was Ott's first deployment to Afghanistan.

The newspaper reported that Ott's awards include two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and three Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.
