Store clerk, gunman wounded in botched robbery

A double shooting during an armed robbery has left a store clerk in guarded condition and the suspect in surgery in Crozer-Chester Medical Center, police said.

Just after 3 p.m., a man entered the Dollar General on Rt. 320 and Chester Pike in Delaware County. The man pulled out a gun and announced a robbery. The female cashier left the register, another worker struggled with the gunman, according to Joe Daly, Springfield Township police chief.

The gunman's weapon fired. A bullet hit the worker in the shoulder. Then the gunman accidentally shot himself in the pelvic area, Daly said. Police found the suspect unconscious and bleeding in his running car at the exit of the parking lot.

Daly declined to release the name of the store clerk. The identity of the wounded gunman is not known, he said.
