Another Rutgers official saw Rice video in Dec.

Rutgers University acknowledged today that another high-ranking college official saw the now infamous videotape of former basketball coach Mike Rice berating and attacking his students long before it became public.

Mark P. Hershhorn of Media, a member of the board of governors and chair of the board's committee on intercollegiate athletics, reviewed the video in early December, according to a statement from Ralph Izzo, board chairman. Up to this point it had been unclear if members of the appointed board had seen the tape before it became public.

Hershhorn is apparently the only board member to have seen it, and he did not bring the issue up before the entire board, according to sources close to the situation.

A woman who answered the phone at his house today said he was playing golf and unavailable to comment. Hershhorn is the chairman and CEO of CKS Associates, a management consultancy firm based in Upper Providence, according to an online biography on Rutgers' website. He's a 1971 Rutgers graduate and earned an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

Izzo did not mention Hershhorn's name in his statement: "In continuing our lesson learned efforts, I was able to confirm on Saturday, April 6 that the chair of the Board of Governors Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics reviewed the video in early December. The video was not seen by the Committee on Intercollegiate Athletics or by any other member of the Board of Governors."

Also today, Izzo and Rutgers President Robert L. Barchi announced an independent adviser would be hired "to conduct a review of the circumstances surrounding the men's basketball program as well as the procedures used to investigate allegations related to former head coach Mike Rice."

Up to this point, it was known that Tim Pernetti, the now-fired athletic director, saw the video in November. Barchi has said he was informed of it but didn't see it until last Tuesday.

Gov. Christie, who has supported Barchi up to this point, will hold a news conference at 11:30 and is expected to be questioned on the Rutgers flap.
