Matthew Royer, the Montgomery County 21-year-old who disappeared late last week, has been found and is safe, Pennsylvania State Police said Thursday morning.
While saying Royer had been "located unharmed," police declined to say where he had been found.
"The family requests that the media not contact them nor reveal his location as they wish to consider this a private and closed matter," according to a State Police statement.
Trooper Morgan Crummy, spokeswoman for the Skippack barracks, said the police had closed their investigation. They did not release any details on why he didn't go home last week, where he went, how he and his family got back in touch, and where they are now.
Family members could not be reached for comment.
Royer had been living in Narragansett, R.I., not far from the University of Rhode Island, where he had been enrolled in the doctorate program in pharmacy. He was no longer in that program and wasn't taking any classes last semester though he still was registered as a student, a university spokeswoman said.
The Perkiomen Valley High School graduate had been expected to arrive home in Skippack Township after leaving Rhode Island on May 16 to live with his parents and work a summer job.
His mother, Janet Royer, said her son left his Narragansett apartment about 6:30 p.m Thursday, texting her that he was on his way.
The family grew concerned about Royer after he failed to show up for a summer job at the Skippack Golf Club.
Royer was seen on video from a security camera at 2:05 a.m. Friday at a Sunoco station on Route 100, about a 30-minute drive from his home. A tipster told police he saw Royer's 2008 silver Chevrolet Cobalt about 11 hours later at Routes 501 and 422 in Lebanon County, more than an hour from his home. The tipster did not see who was driving the car.
State Police sent up a helicopter last week from the Hazleton Aviation Patrol Unit looking for Royer in Fogelsville area near Allentown. They found nothing.
