'Deteriorated' beams force closing of Chesco bridge
After an inspection found defects, the Brunt Mill Road Bridge in Kennett Township, Chester County, which carries over 500 vehicles a day, was closed Friday morning, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced.
After an inspection found defects, the Brunt Mill Road Bridge in Kennett Township, Chester County, which carries over 500 vehicles a day, was closed Friday morning, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced.
The inspection found that steel beams on the bridge, which spans Red Clay Creek, "were deteriorated to the point that the bridge could no longer handle traffic," PennDOT District Executive Lester C. Toaso said in a news release.
During the bridge closure, Burnt Mill Road will be detoured over Norway Road and Spring Mill Road.
The bridge was built in 1935 and is 16 feet wide and 22 feet long.
The closing comes the day after a Washington lobby group reported that Pennsylvania leads the nation in defective bridges.
