Mishap briefly shuts down ramp and northbound I-95

A piece of metal fell onto an I-95 ramp from construction on the Ben Franklin Bridge on Friday, striking a car and briefly halting traffic on I-95.

The unidentified metal component was being used in the installation of a temporary work platform under the bridge, said Fran O'Brien, spokeswoman for the Delaware River Port Authority, which owns and operates the toll bridge.

She said a cable being used in the installation broke, causing the metal object to fall around 12:30 p.m. The object hit a car on the I-676 ramp to northbound I-95, causing a brief closure of the ramp and northbound I-95. The highway was reopened about 1 p.m. - Paul Nussbaum
