A man believed to be a turkey hunter who was dressed in heavy camouflage and carrying a shotgun was hit by two vehicles and killed in the predawn darkness on a rural stretch of Route 70 in Burlington County, state police said.

Capt. Steve Jones, a state police spokesman, said the driver of a Mercedes Benz van was westbound in Southampton Township around 5 a.m. and did not see anything when he felt something hit the vehicle on the driver's side.

The driver stopped, walked back and saw the boots of the camouflaged victim, who had fallen into the eastbound lane.

The motorist turned around and saw a tractor-trailer approaching, Jones said. He tried to wave down the rig, but it ran over the victim.

The tractor-trailer did not stop, but after it arrived at its destination the driver learned of the accident and notified police, the spokesman said. He told investigators he thought he had run over a deer.

Police found the victim's car parked off the highway on the westbound side, Jones said. He was carrying a shotgun with bird shot when he was struck. His name was not immediately released.

The Spring turkey hunting season began April 21 ans ends May 23.

Route 70 was closed for some time between Red Lion Circle (US 206) and Chairville Road to the west for the investigation.

The investigation is not yet complete, Jones said.
