Four people from Philadelphia, including a newly wed couple, have drowned in the Dominican Republic.

Civil Defense Director Amado Avila said the three men and a woman apparently got caught in strong currents Sunday off Playa Macao near the resort community of Punta Cana.

The three men were identified as Kush, Jay and Shivang Patel. The woman was identified as Kush Patel's wife, Kajal Patel. They ranged in age from 27 to 30.

Family members said Kush and Kajal were married in November and lived in Northeast Philadelphia.

They were among 12 members of an extended family visiting Playa Macao on Sunday when the incident occurred.

6ABC said the three men went into the water to help Kajal Patel when she got caught in a strong current.

Jay and Shivang were brothers and a cousin of Kush Patel, 6ABC reported.
