Car blasts hole in Girard College wall

A four-door sedan somehow crashed through a portion of the thick, rocky wall that makes up the formidable barrier of Girard College in the Fairmount section of the city this afternoon.

The driver of the car that went hood-first into the wall near North 24th Street and North College Avenue was reportedly taken to the hospital following the crash at about 4:30 p.m.

Two hours later, a Girard College maintenance man cleaned up smaller chunks of the wall where a hole roughly 10 feet wide by 10 feet high had been created by the car.

Police had yet to give details behind the crash by 7:15 p.m., but initial reports indicate the driver may have suffered a seizure just before colliding with the 165-year-old wall.
