Firefighter shoots self at Elkins Park station, according to report

A firefighter reportedly shot himself in the hand with a firearm at La Mott Fire Station Number 2 in Elkins Park shortly after 9 p.m., according to a report.

The firefighter was only identified as a 22-year-old man who reportedly shot himself accidentally at the volunteer fire company in the Cheltenham Township neighborhood, according to the Breaking News Network.

An officer who answered the telephone at Cheltenham Police Department at 9:45 p.m. could not give any details, describing it only as "a hospital case at this point." A police supervisor wasn't immediately available.

Police held the scene at the fire station at 7600 Penrose Avenue until paramedics arrived, according to the initial BNN report.

A message could not be left at the phone number listed for the fire station which, according to its website, is one of five that operates in Cheltenham.
