One killed, two injured when car strikes pole in Eastwick

A crash near Island Avenue and Lindbergh Boulevard in the Eastwick section of Southwest Philadelphia left one man dead and two others injured.

One man was killed and two injured when a car slammed into a pole in Southwest Philadelphia early Sunday.

Officers responded to the intersection of Island Avenue and Lindbergh Boulevard, in the Eastwick area, about 2:45 a.m., police said.

They found on the trolley tracks a 2015 silver Chevrolet Equinox with heavy front-end damage. The car had struck a SEPTA utility pole, which had then fallen on top of the vehicle, police said.

Two men – the driver, 46, and front seat passenger, 36 – had already exited the vehicle and were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for the treatment of minor injuries.

A second passenger found slumped over in the backseat was pronounced dead on the scene shortly after 3 a.m., police said. His age wasn't available and his identity was not released.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the crash. An investigation remained ongoing Sunday.
