Severe storms, flooding hit area
Flash flood warnings have been issued for most counties in Southeastern Pennsylvania – and parts of Delaware and northern Maryland – as a line of strong thunderstorms rolled through the area early Sunday.
Flash flood warnings were issued today for most counties in Southeastern Pennsylvania - and parts of Delaware and northern Maryland - in the wake of a line of severe thunderstorms that moved through the area Sunday morning.
The Schyulkill Expressway flooded near the Conshohocken curve, and was closed in both directions at about noon today. A tornado warning was briefly issued for Southeastern Bucks County and Mercer County, New Jersey, including the city of Trenton; however, the warning was allowed to expire at 12:15 p.m.
During the height of the storms, street and localized flooding could be seen in low-lying areas. In Delaware County, significant street flooding closed major roadways at about 11 a.m., including Eagle Road in Havertown, where more than a foot of water covered one low-lying intersection. In Marple Township, Delaware County, standing water covered some front yards as well.
The National Weather Service warned that the area's waterways were primed to flood because of recent storms: "With heavy rain already fallen this morning, it will not take much to cause streams to reach or exceed bankfull," the bulletin read.
Flash flood warnings were issued for the Pennsylvania counties of Philadelphia, Delaware, Montgomery, Bucks and Chester, as well as for New Castle County in Northern Delaware and Cecil County in northeast Maryland.
